EXTRA-YEAR STUDENT COMMITS SUICIDE OVER REPEATEDLY FAILED COURSES

An extra year student of the department of Computer Science and Engineering, Kolapo Olowoporoku, has been reported to have commited suicide over some repeatedly failed courses.

Although, he died on Thursday, April 17, his death wasn’t known until Sunday, April 21. He was reported to have taken a dangerous chemical product on Monday, April 14, which did not kill him until Thursday.
According to close friends, it was established that Kolapo Olowoporoku should have duly graduated in the 2016/2017 academic session but he remained on campus due to some outstanding courses he had to pass— CSC 517 and a CVE course. However, he was still unable to pass the courses despite retaking them till the moment he died.
The deceased was said to be a kind-hearted and very jovial person with a great personality. He served in the capacity of the Financial secretary of the Department’s association (Nacoss) between 2014/2015 academic session. He is loved by family and friends.
In a conversation with the acting president of the department, Mr Micheal, he said “his death was a collosal loss and shock to the department of Computer science and engineering despite his tremendous contributions to the progress of the department.”
Kolapo is said to have been buried on Friday, although it is believed that there are plans by the department to organise procession in his memory.
_Suicides Because of Poor Academic Grades:_
It should be recalled that this would be the second time in a recent period that suicide due to poor academic grades would be recorded. In 2016/2017 session, a female student of the university reportedly commited suicide because of poor aacademic grades in a Chemistry course (CHM 101).
As at the time of filing this report, GIW was able to establish
that mass failure is fast becoming a trend on campus and a lot of students now battle depression due to poor academic grades despite burning night candles. Academic performance is majorly influenced various factors including ease of learning and living process. A process which has become so complex for students to come with. It is claimed that the academic and accommodation arrangement of the university is not students-friendly in the sense that the curriculum doesn’t reflect the realities of students’ plighths. For example, examinations in the previous session were conducted without completion of the stipulated lecture hours due to the industrial action of ASUU, which would inevitably result to poor academic performance.
May the souls of the departed ones rest in perfect peace
